Waiting For Godot - Movie Review

Waiting For Godot - Movie Review

Respected Sir,

As we watched this movie Waiting for Godot today, I can’t stop myself for giving response to this movie. Because personally I like this play Waiting for Godot and also movie versions of this play. I think that I want to give response for this movie as early as possible because I don’t want to forget anything from this play or from this movie.

1.  If we first talk about this painting “Longing by Caspar David Friedrich it is inspirational source of setting of Waiting For Godot. Here in this play Samuel Beckett used this all the things in his setting of the play. A country road. A tree. Evening” as setting. Because if we think very minutely we can realize that all the kinds of Waiting needs loneliness. If person is not alone he cannot wait for things for longer period of time. Because when he is not alone he forgets to wait for something and maybe he is busy in his works again. And this kinds of settings provides much loneliness to think constantly about Wait. Because waiting is very boring thing and if we spent our time in other things and we are starting to enjoying that things that time we forget to wait. Same like we forgotten to wait for death because we all are so busy in our life that we forget to wait for death because we are enjoying our lives.

2.  The tree is the only important ‘thing’ in the setting. Because we human beings connect our all emotions with natural things like trees, leaves, revers etc. Here we can say that tree is a symbol of thinking or thoughts. As tree goes much older it seems like more stronger and here in this play there is also one character named Vladimir who is much older and his thinking power is also very good which shows his maturity. In act one there is no leaf and in act two there is some few leaves on that barren tree what does it mean. Maybe writer wants to say that Hopes are never going to die. If one hope for living is ended from there onward other hope is starting.  Barren tree is compared with this earth and when people starts losing their Hopes about God suddenly there happens something and new leaves starting spreading it’s seeds.

3.  I would like to interpret this scene with the help of symbolic use in literature. As we already studied Archetypes of Literature by Northrop Frye. Morning is goes with life and Night is goes with death. Night is related with some bad things in literature. Morning time is also compared with birth of something and Night time is compared with death. So evening maybe goes with old age. And here two main central characters Vladimir and Estragon both are seems to be very old so may be waiting for night to coming or in that sense they are waiting for death to be coming. And we compered nature with God that this nature itself is a God so Moon is a symbol of inner enlightenment that person have light to me God within itself. If we search God in the outside of world he is not going to meet but if we search God within us may be he will meet us in a shape of faith, trust, happiness, enlightenment etc.  So moon symbolize strength and light of inner strength. Moon plays role of lighthouse.

4.  The director feels the setting with some debris. First of all I want to give meaning of this word Debris that what does it mean. Debris means scattered pieces of rubbish or remains. If we connect this thing with this play that time we feel that our whole life is seems to be debris. Our life is nothing but it is only jointed parts of some departed things. As Samuel Beckett says in his quote that,  "Nothing is more important than nothing". Same thing we can apply here that our life is not important as such. We born with some cries and we will die with some worries. Then comes waste and all types of Garbage. Our life is same like garbage. Nothing fruitful emerges from it.

5.  If talk about “Nothingness” in this play is nothingness is a central theme of this play. As Samuel Beckett says in his quote that, “Nothing is more important than nothing". Throughout the play nothing is happens. Only two characters waiting for someone to come named like Mr.Godot. They don’t know who he is? When he is going to come? Where he is going to come? They passing there time in monotones way. Repetition of actions are going on. Doing something very meaningless. Passing there time. Godot is not coming and play ends. So we can say that the play begins with the dialogue “Nothing to be done”. And Nothing remains at the center of this play.

6.  I am agreed with statement of E.G. Marshal, Life has to goes on no matters what takes it is. Even if we wish to kill our self we can’t. Because living life is a habit for all human beings. Taking breath is also deep-rooted habit of all of us. We cannot escape from this habit. It is one type of addiction and “Hope” provides energy to live life. So I am agree with this statement that this play Waiting for Godot is a positive play, not negative, not pessimistic.

7.  In this play audience find two things very easily. One is Boot and another is Hat. Here in this play writer used this both the things as symbols. Boots is a symbol of lower order of thinking or related with body only which has nothing to do with mind and thinking. Another symbol is Hat it symbolize higher level of thinking and thoughts which Vladimir is doing. It suggests different level of thinking process.

8.  Yes, I do agree with this statement that the obedience of Lucky is extremely irritating and nauseatic. But if we think generally it is habit of very human being that all human beings are obedient to one or another person. If not obedient to person than to God. If we see religiously or spiritually we all are slaves of God. If God is Pozzo we all are like Lucky the slave. We giving our rope to master God without asking single question.  And we try to ask means we dare to ask He never replies. We not giving priority to our questions, He is not reacting to our problem though we are blind follower of him and following him. We can’t go far from Him.  As master Pozzo says “Don’t questions me”. He don’t likes that anyone asks him questions. He never answers to anyone same things God is doing. So at the end I want to say that our mentality is also like slave Lucky that we are giving our rope to so called master known as God. We can’t escape our self from this feelings. It is merely to impossible things.

9.  According to me this all three things are appropriate for this unknown word Godot. Because if we don’t know who he is? We can give any interpretation to this word according to our wish. It is God all human beings are waiting for. Because all believes that one day God will come and our all troubles are going to end. But some people are afraid of death. They don’t except death as simple as that. And both things are come at their time only. Neither before time nor after time. And desire is also endless thing.

10. “The subject of the play is not Godot but ‘Waiting”. Central idea of this play or central theme of this play is not Godot. It is “Waiting”. Waiting is at the center of this play. There is always some kind of waiting in our life which we live. All the time we all are waiting for something to be happened in our life to be done. We prepared our self for something or let’s say for waiting.

11.  I done both of things. I read play and as well as I watched movie also. Reading play is also different experience and we get lot of time to think between the lines and we can understand dialogues properly. But it cannot give us background things like how play is supposed to perform on the stage.  Because play is written for performance not for reading. And when we watched movie version of this play we can understand that how dialogue delivery is going on between two characters. How they entertain there live audience. How they interact with audience and how camera and audio visual things trying capture ideas of writer how they deliver it to audience with the help of audio and visuals.

12. Personally I like this scene Vladimir – Estragon killing time in questions and conversations while waiting because our life also seems like this. Time pass and doing infinite actions is reflection of our time. We all are also passing our times as such. He also speaks like this that “Time has stopped”,  “Everything seems Black” , “How time flies when someone is happy” this all are dialogues of Vladimir. “What can we do, there is nothing can we do expects passing our times. They doing all infinite actions, meaningless actions. But may be hat actions are very important to them.

13.Yes, there is existential crisis or meaninglessness of human existence in the irrational and indifference when Vladimir and Estragon are doing meaningless actions to pass their time. And at the end of this play when both are tired of Waiting For Mr.Godot and they are planning to suicide. They wants to commit suicide with the help of rope they want to tie with tree and wants to hang themselves ant trying to die.

14. If we look this idea of suicide in Existentialism we can say that every person is free to do whatever they want to do. But at the another level they can’t blame God for anything. They themselves are responsible for all the things. They are free to do suicide even and they can kill there selves. If they don’t want to exist anymore in this world but with some positive strength.

15. With the help of this historical reading we can say that Beckett thinks that Ireland is a slave of England and can’t free himself from this. We can also read this things with the help of colonial aspect.

                                                        Thank You …
